House of Mercy Recordings Presents…
The First Friday Showcase
Showcase, Friday, January 6th
7 – 9PM
House of Mercy Recordings has now released 25 recordings—from Charlie Parr to the House of
Mercy Band to Molly Maher to the Urban Hillbilly Quartet…and many others—and we've
decided to start a regular showcase for our artists. The first Friday of each month we'll gather at
Ginkgo Coffee in St. Paul to hear some of the artists whose music we love and have released.
This month we'll be hearing from:
Catie Jo Pidel
- Catie Jo is a prodigious local fiddler and songwriter who spends most of her time bouncing and smiling. She will be accompanied by Benji Flaming, who recently finished up as the banjo player with Monroe Crossing. With a healthy dose of quirky, these two musicians play a combination of the traditional and not-so-traditional, and have a whole lot of fun in the process.
Dewi Sant
- This showcase will feature, Michael Morris, the leader of this Northfield-based indie-folk group.
For fans of: Neutral Milk Hotel, Low, Bright Eyes, Sun Kil Moon, Fleet Foxes and Blitzen Trapper.
Chris Becknell
- Fiddle. Guitar. Classical chops. Chris can play just about anything and likely will at this
showcase! His specialty: beautiful and soaring instrumentals. |

JT NERO and ALLISON RUSSELL
Wednesday, January 11, 8:00 pm
$10
www.jtneroandallisonrussell.com
JT Nero is a strange and distinct songwriter - he lists Mark Twain and Sam Cooke among his biggest influences. He is a poet of the everyday and the absurd, the lonely, the hopeful and the semi-hopeful. He's got a fractured country soul croon, full of doo-wop ghosts and old time religion.
Whether touring with his muse and frequent collaborator, Allison Russell (Po' Girl), or backed by the scintillating Chicago rock n' soul outfit, the Clouds, Nero has emerged as one of the compelling new voices in American music. With the Clouds he's a rock n' roll preacher -- on his own, he digs deeper into darker, often fantastical nuances of his work. |

Peter Mulvey, with Chris Bargmann and Blake Thomas
Friday, January 13, 8:00 pm
$12 in advance, $15 at the door
We welcome back Peter Mulvey, a very talented songwriter with a beautiful, hearty voice and personality to match.
Night after night, whether performing solo, duo, or sometimes even with a band, Mulvey attempts to be the sum of his parts, to draw on all the musical legacies he has studied, to make a fresh, vital moment out of everything he and the audience have brought to the table that night. "People need this. I need this. To come together in a room, to try to make music come alive, for real, for right now, and then to let it go…that is the whole deal for me." |

Free book signing and reception from 6:30-7:30
Show ($10 ticket) begins at 8 pm
Ginkgo's and Red House Records invite you to a special celebration for Scott Alarik's new folk music novel, Revival, which Booklist calls "a joyous celebration of folk musicians and their world." A love story set in the modern Cambridge folk scene, Maine folk legend Gordon Bok calls Revival "just about the warmest, most nourishing book I've read;" and Americana star Mary Gauthier says it's "a beautifully told and totally beautiful love story." Once a local folk favorite, Scott will perform songs and readings from his novel, joined by Cliff Eberhardt, Dean Magraw, and other special guests.
"Revival is much more than a great fictional take on the world of folk music…it belongs in the larger world of American music and letters." John Gorka
"A wonderful window into the world of folk music, the dreams of an artist, and a reminder that what we want and what we need are rarely the same thing…a total joy to read." Performing Songwriter |

events for your generous donations...some great musicians!
Musical
events that are not part of the concert series take place in a more casual
atmosphere. Food and beverages are served during the performance, and
customers may come and go at will. If no ticket price is indicated, musicians
play for your generous donations. Unless
otherwise noted, all events take place at GINKGO coffeehouse on Snelling.
The open stage is run with a lottery system, meaning names
are drawn to see who will perform in each slot. This means you don't have
to try to get there too early to be the first to sign up. The open mic
is hosted by artists
